It’s been far too long since I’ve written about the inspirational, talented and gorgeous team in life and love Hanan Kattan and Shamim Sarif. This is the couple that brought us the fantastic books and films The World Unseen and I Can’t Think Straight.
Hanan and Shamim exposed the world to thought-provoking tales of love and truth as well as some girl-on-girl action. They also exposed me personally to chicken molokhia which is a dish I crave just about every day.
Since releasing I Can’t Think Straight, we fans have been clamoring for more Leyla and Tala. It wasn’t enough to watch them struggle with identity or fall in love or stay true to themselves in spite of cultural taboos and unsupportive family. We want more of what seemed a perfect match made in heaven – or in London anyway. Hanan and Shamim want to give us what we want because they’re just that giving. They want to produce the I Can’t Think Straight web series for all of us who want more struggle and romance and girl-on-girl action.
Creating art is a labor of love, however, and one for which our filmmaking friends receive modest reward. There is no bucket of cash or benefactor to bring this web series to life. There is only your kindness and desire for what is sure to be one of the most entertaining and titillating web series about Middle Eastern and British lesbians ever.
If we were still in London, Hanan would lovingly admonish us for not putting our networking acumen to use to help spread the word. “FIRED FIRED FIRED!” she’d call out while waving her finger at us and delivering the cheekiest of grins. To Hanan I say, “Forgive us our unworthiness, great producer and friend! We will make it up to you!” To which she would most certainly respond, “Well Schlock, Schlock, Ladies! Get on with it then!” And we would know that she meant to say “chop chop” but she speaks 42 languages (give or take) and doesn’t always get the right words out in English. But we would not call attention to it because we are already in the doghouse and also because we are convinced she is an international spy. English, Arabic, French, Italian, Japanese…who IS this woman?? I digress.
